At our final meeting of the year on December 20, Jacob Peterson, the President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area was our guest. He spoke of his background as a child in a troubled home for whom a mentor became his “parents.” He described the demographic that Big Brothers Big Sisters addresses. 85% of the 6- to 18-years olds come from low income families and 15% from moderate incomes. The program’s success comes from 100 years of evidence-based practices and the results of 73 independent evaluations. 81% of “littles” (the term applied to the mentored kids) are involved in sports, they are 46% less likely to use drugs and alcohol, and 52% less likely to skip school. And 90% of “littles” become BB BS mentors. After the presentation, Katie presented a donation from our Community Fund.
Innovative School – December 14th, 2023
On December 14, Vernon Brown and Roger Klausler accepted an invitation to the Kiwanis Club of Citrus Heights to learn about the Innovative School that will debut in the 2024-25 academic year.
Attending the session that was led by Elizabeth Wahl, Principal of the Innovative School, were 25 people from the school’s design team, faculty and communications specialists, in addition to members of neighborhood organizations, and the San Juan Unified School District.
In 2022, San Juan Unified School District launched an effort to reimagine what was possible in elementary education and to create a new learning experience at an elementary or K-8 school in the district.
After every school in the SJUSD that was interested in being the Innovative School campus had undergone a ride-ranging review by the development team, the Woodside K-8 campus was selected as the ideal location. As that review was going in, teachers were selected after extensive interviews.
Principal Wahl said that student engagement was integral to the creation of the Innovative School. The answers to What did students want? came from middle school focus groups. Arising from those conversation and those with the new faculty came the three pillars of the Innovative school: Belonging and Wellness, Experiential Learning, Wellness and Connection. And the key question: Does it benefit all students? If not, who is left out?
At our meeting on November 15, President Katie Escajeda and Div 44 Lt Governor Gail Cirata presented the Legion of Honor to Bill Hooper, a member of Citrus Heights Kiwanis for 46 of the club’s 51 years. He has been President three times, President of the Board of Kiwanis Family House, and has held Board and officer positions at all levels of Kiwanis. Thank you for your decades of service, Bill !
